PITTSBURGH -- It looked like Alfredo Simons bubble was about to burst. Air Force 1 Blanche Pas Cher . After being one of the biggest surprises of the young season for the Cincinnati Reds by ably filling in for injured starting pitcher Mat Latos, Simon hit a rough patch in the first inning Wednesday night. He walked three batters in a row to force in a run. Then, just like that, the right-hander went back to being dominant, pitching into the seventh inning despite the erratic early control, and Jay Bruce drove in a run for a fifth consecutive game as the Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2. "It was cold and I was having a hard time feeling the ball," said Simon, pitching on a blustery night when the game-time temperature was 50 degrees. "After that first inning, I felt a lot better and pitched like Ive been pitching. Simon (3-1) worked 6 2-3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and five walks while striking out four. Simon has pitched at least six innings in each of his four starts this season as a replacement for the injured Mat Latos and has a 1.30 ERA. Simon pitched exclusively in relief the previous two years. "Hes been terrific," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Hes been an extremely versatile pitcher for us the last two-plus seasons. Hes always been a talented guy, but hes really found himself and made himself into a very good-looking starting pitcher." Bruce had two hits and knocked in the final run of the decisive three-run fifth inning against Charlie Morton (0-3) that gave the Reds a 4-2 lead. Billy Hamilton also had two hits for Cincinnati, which stole four bases while winning seven of 10 games since a 3-7 start. "We took advantage of what we could because this is team that might not give you a lot most nights," Bruce said. "We tried to put some pressure on the defence." Jonathan Broxton pitched a scoreless ninth inning, despite allowing two hits, for his third save. Andrew McCutchen had two hits and homered for the third consecutive night for the Pirates, who lost for the 10th time in 13 games. Morton also had control issues, walking five in six innings while giving up four runs -- three earned -- and four hits with four strikeouts. "I was yanking my fastball all night," he said. "There were times were I was trying to go inside on left-handed hitters and missing in the right-handed batters box. I was literally missing by 3 feet." The Reds used their speed to go ahead in a fifth inning that included two stolen bases and the second throwing error of the game by catcher Chris Stewart. NOTES: Pittsburgh C Russell Martin was a late scratch because of a miscommunication. Martin, who is 0-for-7 against Simon, thought he was getting Wednesday off while manager Clint Hurdle thought he and Martin had decided Thursday would be an off day. ... Reds LHP Aroldis Chapman threw early batting practice, the first time he had faced hitters since suffering fractures of his eye and nose along with a mild concussion March 19 when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Kansas Citys Salvador Perez. Chapman pitched from behind a protective screen and the next step is for him to throw batting practice without the screen sometime this weekend when the Reds visit Atlanta. ... Only fitting, since Ligety was a big fan of von Gruenigen growing up in Utah.To have the same amount of World Cup wins as him is surreal, Ligety said. Its really cool.In fourth place after the opening run, Ligety found speed where others couldnt on a steadily deteriorating course. He finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 34.07 seconds. Alexis Pinturault of France was second, 0.18 seconds behind, and Austrias Marcel Hirscher ended up third.Ligety had four metal screws inserted into his left wrist after an accident during training Nov 22. He didnt take any time off after surgery, though. Instead, he trained without a pole for a little bit, since he couldnt hang on to it. Ligety said that actually helped him develop more balance going around gates.Hirscher joked that it really didnt matter if Ligety raced with one pole — or even one ski — he would still be fast.Ted is definitely one of the best, no, Im sure, the best GS skier in the world, Hirscher said. It impresses me a lot. It is really great for all young skiers that they can watch him and see. It doesnt matter if he skis with one pole, two poles, one ski or no skis, he just does it.Benjamin Raich of Austria led after the first run, but it was a tightly bunched field, with eight racers all within a second.Ligety hammered down a course he knows so well, staying out of the grooves in the soft snow due to the warm weather and building more and more speed. He even dragged that surgically repaired wrist on the snow around several turns, because its something hes always done and he wasnt going to let the injury get in the way of his performance. When he crossed the finish line in the lead, the crowd erupted. Ligety pumped his ski pole, knoowing his time would be difficult to match. Nike Air Force 1 Just Do It Rouge. .Next up was Hirscher, who made several mistakes. Then Pinturault, who wasnt as clean up top as Ligety. And finally, Raich, the final skier of the day, who lost his lead early and struggled as he slipped to fourth. It was Ligetys fifth giant slalom win in Beaver Creek. It also drew him closer to Hirscher and Pinturault in the overall GS race. Ligety has won the discipline four of the last five seasons.Hirscher and Pinturault, those guys are amazing skiers for sure, said the 30-year-old Ligety, who won gold at the Sochi Games in the GS. Those guys are guys I love to watch ski. To get in front of them is always nice, especially being the old guy.Hirscher leads the GS standings and is second in the overall race to Norways Kjetil Jansrud, who won the downhill on the Birds of Prey course Friday and was runner-up in the super-G Saturday. If I want to have a chance against Kjetil, I have to be better than today, said Hirscher, who trails Jansrud by 172 points. I have to win more races than Kjetil. Right now, hes the man to beat. Im not in position. This was certainly a solid weekend for Pinturault, who also finished third in the super-G.Im really happy, Pinturault said before leaving to catch a plane.American Tim Jitloff had a solid showing as he wound up ninth, while David Chodounsky finished 17th. Bode Miller didnt race this weekend as he recovers from back surgery. He hopes to return in time for the world championships in February at Beaver Creek.Ligety had a rough showing in October during a season opening GS in Soelden, Austria, when he finished 10th in a race won by Hirscher. But Ligety cleaned up some technical issues, and it showed on his final run.I was confident to ski the way I wanted to, Ligety said. It was a really fun day. Now, the only name ahead of Ligety on the all-time GS list is Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark, who had 46 wins.Any chance of catching up to him? What hes done is pretty unattainable, Ligety said. I would say Stenmarks thing is a pipe dream. ' ' '
