MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins fired offensive line coach Jim Turner and longtime head athletic trainer Kevin ONeill on Wednesday for their roles in the teams bullying scandal. The moves were the first punitive steps taken by the Dolphins since a report on the NFLs investigation of the case was released last week. Investigators found that guard Richie Incognito and two teammates engaged in persistent harassment directed at tackle Jonathan Martin, another offensive lineman and an assistant trainer. Martin left the team at midseason, and Incognito was suspended for the final eight games. Turner didnt attempt to stop the harassment and even took part in some of the taunting of offensive lineman Andrew McDonald, the NFL report said. ONeill expressed hostility toward the investigation and cut short an interview with those conducting it, according to the report. ONeill was fired shortly after he and other team officials arrived in Indianapolis for the leagues annual scouting combine. Turner didnt make the trip. In a news release announcing the firings, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said the behaviour described in the report was "against the core values of our organization." "After receiving the report, I conducted my own internal review of the facts to determine the appropriate steps for our organization," Ross said. "Jim Turner and Kevin ONeill are good people who care a great deal about their profession and the players whom they serve, but both exhibited poor judgment at times, which led me to this conclusion." Ross said he has been in contact with Martin and will meet soon with the two-year veteran. Martin has two seasons remaining on his contract with the Dolphins, but last month Ross said he didnt believe the tackle would play again for Miami. Incognito becomes a free agent this winter and will try to sign with another team. Coach Joe Philbin made his first public comments since the reports release, saying the vulgar language and behaviour outlined were disappointing and unacceptable, and adding that fundamental values of respect were violated. "That ultimately rests on my shoulders, and I will be accountable moving forward for making sure that we emphasize a team-first culture of respect toward one another," Philbin said in a statement. The report found no evidence that Philbin was aware of abusive conduct within the team. Several people interviewed told investigators Turner gave McDonald a male sex doll as a gag gift around Christmas 2012. Turner told investigators he didnt remember the incident, but investigators said they didnt believe him. Martin told investigators ONeill and other team employees saw an assistant trainer being humiliated and didnt intervene. ONeill allegedly laughed at racial insults directed toward the assistant trainer. ONeill was the Dolphins trainer for 18 years and has been in the NFL for 25 years. He and his Miami staff won national awards, including one last year from the National Athletic Trainers Association. Turner joined the Dolphins shortly after Philbin was hired as head coach two years ago. Wholesale NMD . The Yankees won the opener of the series before the Royals bounced back with two straight wins. The Yankees are coming off a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox, winning Sundays finale 7-4 thanks to pinch-hitter Brian McCanns three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning. "It was awesome," McCann said. "To come off the bench, you know, pinch-hitting is not the easiest thing to do. So to get a pitch up in the zone and not miss it with the game on the line was special." New York is 3 1/2 games out of the second wild card spot in the American League and will start Michael Pineda tonight. Pineda has not gotten a decision in two starts since coming off the disabled list, but has allowed just three runs, six hits and one walk over 11 innings against Baltimore and Houston. "He was pretty good. I thought he got a little tired at the end, but thats to be expected," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Pineda after his six- inning outing on Wednesday versus the Astros. "We pushed him a little bit, but I thought he gavve us a really good performance.dddddddddddd" The 25-year-old righty is 2-2 with a 2.05 earned run average in six starts this year and has split two previous meetings with the Royals while posting a 2.57 ERA. This contest extends the Royals homestand to 10 games and theyll look to bounce back after a 3-1 loss to Texas on Sunday. Jason Vargas went six innings and was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on 11 hits and four walks. "I thought it was a start that he really had to grind out," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "I thought he did a phenomenal job. He didnt have any clean innings, but I thought he did a phenomenal job keeping us in the game." Yost has to also be happy with how James Shields has pitched as of late and the right-hander goes tonight having posted a 3-0 mark over his last four starts. Shields is coming off a 7-4 win over Colorado on Tuesday, when he yielded a pair of runs over six innings while striking out six. That improved him to 12-6 on the year with a 3.28 ERA. The 32-year-old beat the Yankees on June 8 by a 2-1 score, charged with one unearned run over six frames. However, that still left Shields just 9-15 in his career versus New York with a 4.20 ERA.
